The Adult Longeing Guide

One definition being “to stay in motion”
Across the street a stringed instrument shop,

cakey clay models hung as in a butcher’s
Longing for autumn: weather of doorways

and brick, burnt syrup smell, fizzlier
Like the impossibility of any but natural light

I saw at the bookstore in Gambier
The Adult Longeing Guide longeing pronounced

lunging a term for riding a horse on
a tether, I don’t know if there’s a difference

between pattern and order or if art demands
faith in order, or if recurrences are all

we should mine, how the wind blew
Matt’s loose-leaf paged proofs and I thought

of something I penned earlier about oar
prints on water, a woman pulling leaves

out of branches, And another key move being
we could to we might to we might as well
